Hannah's Mario Kart Cake (12th 2016)
This cake was
for our younger daughter's 12th birthday. She has been playing
Mario Kart 8 lately and chose this theme. I tried to incorporate
as many tracks as I could, which ended up at 5. We have Rainbow
Road, Sherbert Land, Ribbon Road, Animal Crossing and Royal
Raceway. We tried to get as many characters in there as we
could. Some we bought, some made, the scales are all over the
place. We modified matchbox cars using sculpey clay to make some
karts. We also modified some characters to look like others
(Mario became Wario, Luigi is Waluigi etc). This cake turned out
almost exactly as planned which is rare, we all like Mario Kart in the
house so it was really special. The entire castle is made of ~10
box cakes and Animal Crossing and towers took 8 batches of rice
krispies to make. We didn't finish it all at the party but
eventually we did. Sherbert Land was originally going to be cake
or rice krispy but after scaling, there was just too much food plus
stryrofoam days ahead is so much easier than food the night before the
party. It was yellow cake, buttercream frosting and satin ice
fondant. My wife made so many props for this cake, we ran out of
room and couldn't place them all. She did a great job.
